Can I Apply Nystatin Powder Directly on a Stoma?

The topic at hand is about using Nystatin powder directly on a stoma. Nystatin is often prescribed for fungal issues, and there's a question about whether it's safe to apply it directly to the stoma. Here are some insights and advice from people who have experience with this:

1. Many people have used Nystatin in various forms—powder, cream, or liquid—on the skin around the stoma and have not experienced any harm if a small amount touches the stoma itself. However, experiences can differ from person to person.

2. One person mentioned that they apply Nystatin liquid generously to both the skin around the stoma and the stoma itself every time they change their barrier, which is every other day. They haven't had any negative effects but suggest testing a small area first to be sure.

3. Another individual uses Nystatin cream where the skin meets the stoma. They have not had any issues when the cream comes into contact with the edge of the stoma.

4. Someone else believes that the stoma tissue is less likely to get a fungal infection and might not need medication. They recommend checking with a Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nurse (WOCN) or another healthcare professional for advice.

5. An alternative method shared involves using Bacitracin ointment for irritated or damaged skin, then applying stoma powder over it, securing it with tape, and placing the wafer over this "patch." While this might reduce the time the wafer stays in place, it usually helps resolve the irritation.

6. A word of caution: some topical medications, including antifungals and antibiotics, might affect how well the wafer sticks. It's important to keep an eye on the seal's integrity if you use any product under the barrier.
