Switching from Coloplast to ConvaTec Night Bags: Adapter Issues?

This topic is about someone who has switched from using Coloplast to ConvaTec night bags for their urostomy needs. They are facing some challenges with adapters and connections between different products. Here are some helpful insights and advice shared by others:

1. The user switched to a ConvaTec urostomy pouch with a soft-tap outlet because they prefer the moldable-flange barrier. However, they find the ConvaTec overnight drainage solution, a large rigid jug, impractical for travel. They want to continue using their foldable Coloplast night drainage bag.

2. The Coloplast night-bag connector is too narrow for the 1/4-inch ConvaTec soft-tap outlet. The tubing that comes with the ConvaTec jug fits the soft-tap but lacks ribs, making it prone to disconnecting if the user moves in bed.

3. ConvaTec provided an adapter with a ribbed end, but the user feels it is not secure enough. They are looking for a reliable adapter to connect the ConvaTec soft-tap pouch to the Coloplast foldable night bag.

4. After reaching out to ConvaTec, they learned that the company does not offer a compatible soft night bag or suitable adapter. ConvaTec suggested trying a Bard night drainage bag, but the user is unsure about the tubing diameter and seeks confirmation from others who use Bard bags.

Here are some practical suggestions:

- Treat the issue like a plumbing problem:
- Check garden-irrigation or aquarium-supply sections for ribbed push-on connectors that fit 1/4-inch tubing.
- Warm the tubing end in hot water to make it easier to slide on, then let it cool to grip tightly.
- If connections are still loose, use cable ties or small hose clips for security. For a permanent seal, consider plumber’s solvent-weld cement.

- Consider using barbed tubing adapters and quick-disconnects:
- Some users connect Hollister urostomy pouches to Bard 4000 ml night drainage bags using inexpensive barbed adapters (3/8-in. to 1/4-in.) available on Amazon or at hardware stores.
- Low-profile, valved quick-disconnect fittings can prevent leaks when uncoupling.
- CamelBak blue antimicrobial tubing and adapters can be used as alternatives to standard medical tubing.
- Avoid clamps by securing the connector-to-tubing joint with superglue for a permanent solution.

These mechanical adapters and fittings might also help connect the ConvaTec soft-tap (1/4-in.) to Coloplast or Bard night-bag tubing.
