Fried Foods and Colostomy - Any Digestive Issues?

Let's talk about how fried foods might affect someone with a colostomy. If you have a colostomy, you might wonder if eating deep-fried foods like fish, chips, or egg rolls could cause digestive issues. Here are some insights and tips that might help:

1. Many people with a colostomy don't have special issues with fried foods, but everyone's experience is different. It's a good idea to start with small portions to see how your body reacts.

2. Some common problems people mention include:
- Feeling uncomfortably heavy or bloated during a meal.
- Experiencing rapid, loose output after eating very greasy foods.

3. To avoid feeling overloaded, try eating half of your meal and taking the rest home.

4. The type of oil used for frying can make a difference:
- Lard was traditionally used for its flavor but can be harder to digest.
- Canola oil is commonly used in restaurants today.
- Peanut oil has a high smoke point and might cause fewer digestive issues for some, but be careful if you have a peanut allergy.

5. If you're cooking at home and want to reduce grease:
- Consider making salmon "fish & chips" instead of using cod or white fish.
- Heat peanut oil thoroughly before adding battered fish, and drain the cooked pieces well on paper towels to remove excess oil.

6. If you feel discomfort after a meal, try dissolving ¼ teaspoon of baking soda (not baking powder) in a bottle of water and sip it slowly.

7. Remember, every ostomate is different. Introduce any new or suspect food in small amounts and pay attention to how your body responds.
