Seeking advice for post-op heartburn after emergency colectomy

This topic is about managing severe heartburn one week after undergoing an emergency colectomy, which resulted in a colostomy. A caregiver is looking for advice on two main issues: general tips for the early recovery period and immediate ways to relieve painful heartburn that hasn't improved with typical treatments.

Here are some helpful suggestions:

1. Elevate the upper body: Many people find relief by not lying flat in bed. You can use pillows to prop yourself up or consider an adjustable bed that allows you to raise your head and feet, creating a "hammock" effect.

2. Cold chocolate milk: Some have found that a cold glass of chocolate milk can quickly soothe heartburn.

3. Plain water: Slowly sipping a glass of water might help neutralize the acid causing the reflux.

4. Sodium bicarbonate options:
- Ask a doctor about sodium bicarbonate tablets.
- Try dissolving ½ teaspoon of baking soda in water and sipping it as needed.

5. Acid-neutralizing liquids:
- Over-the-counter options like Mylanta, which contain magnesium/aluminum hydroxide, are often used in hospitals.
- Gripe water, typically given to infants, has been reported to help adults as well.

6. Unconventional but effective: A small amount of pickle juice has been noted to help alleviate symptoms.

7. General recovery reminder: Healing takes time, so move slowly and take persistent heartburn seriously to prevent damage to the esophagus from acid.

8. Secondary benefit: Elevating the upper body might also help those who use a CPAP machine for sleep apnea.
