Help! Clear slimy liquid causing flange issues

This topic is about dealing with a challenging situation after a colostomy, specifically when there's a lot of clear, slippery mucus coming from the stoma. This mucus can make it difficult for the flange to stick properly, leading to leaks and skin irritation. Here are some helpful tips and insights shared by others who have faced similar issues:

1. Make sure your skin is completely dry before applying any products, as moisture can prevent adhesives from sticking.

2. Regularly re-measure your stoma. Even a slightly too large opening can allow mucus to get under the wafer and cause problems.

3. Try a layering technique that has worked for some:
- First, apply a Brava Protective Sheet (Coloplast) directly on dry skin.
- Next, use a Brava Skin Barrier Wipe over the sheet.
- Finally, apply the flange or wafer.
- When removing the sheet, use an adhesive-remover spray and take it off dry. Avoid showering with it on.

4. For extra security, add Brava Tape (flange extenders, Coloplast) around the outer edge of the wafer. Many people have found this helps stop leaks.

5. If you're still having trouble with seals, consider trying Hollister CeraRing barrier rings. Users have reported better adhesion with these compared to other rings.

6. Keep a supply of mattress protectors or bed-protector sheets from your delivery company. These can help protect against nighttime leaks and make appliance changes easier.

7. Maintain your electrolyte balance by having something salty each day, like a packet of ready-salted crisps. This can help reduce fatigue caused by sodium loss through an active stoma.

8. Keep a diary to track your diet and the consistency of your output. Note which foods thicken, thin, or irritate your output to better manage your skin condition and overall comfort.
