Stomach Bug or Dehydration? Need Help!

This topic is about someone experiencing a sudden increase in watery output from their ileostomy, along with extreme fatigue and suspected dehydration. They are concerned it might be a stomach virus and are seeking advice on whether this is normal for ostomates. They are also worried about starting a new job soon and want to avoid a costly doctor visit due to lack of insurance.

Here are some helpful insights and advice shared by others:

1. If the output remains extremely watery or excessive, it's important to seek professional help quickly. Many suggest visiting the ER or at least calling a stoma nurse to prevent kidney damage from dehydration.

2. Continuously replace fluids and electrolytes. Consider drinking:
- Water with electrolyte sources like Gatorade, Pedialyte, or Halo Hydration packets.
- Milk, orange juice, or V-8 juice.
- Warm bouillon cube broth or green tea with honey.

3. Try to continue eating regular food if possible to maintain nutrient intake.

4. Keep an eye on how long the high-volume liquid output lasts. If it continues for more than 4–5 days, a hospital evaluation is recommended, even if it seems like a stomach bug.

5. Consider other possible causes such as stomach flu, food poisoning, COVID-19 (take a test), or a urinary tract infection.

6. Rest as much as possible, as tiredness is common with dehydration and illness.

7. Remember that ostomates can see the exact amount of output, so any drastic change should be approached with caution.
