Managing Sweat Around My Stoma with a Urostomy Pouch

Managing sweat around a urostomy stoma can be a bit challenging, especially if you're using a one-piece SenSura Mio pouch and find that heavy sweating is causing the adhesive to loosen. If regular deodorant isn't helping because it prevents the pouch from sticking, here are some practical tips that might help you keep your appliance secure, even in hot and sweaty conditions.

- Some people find that their appliance stays put despite heavy sweating, which might be due to differences in skin chemistry or how well the appliance fits.

- You might want to try a layered sealing method:
1. Start by cleaning your skin and applying calamine lotion. Make sure it dries completely.
2. Place a hydrocolloid barrier or seal directly on your skin.
3. Add an Eakin Seal over the hydrocolloid for extra cushioning and absorption.
4. Use hydrocolloid "extending" tape to reinforce both seals, creating an airtight barrier.
5. Apply the wafer, then add more hydrocolloid tape around its edge for a final seal.
6. Attach the pouch.
7. Optionally, place soft gauze pads over problem areas and secure them with additional hydrocolloid tape to absorb sweat before it reaches the wafer.

- If you notice sweat starting to creep toward the appliance, dry the area immediately and apply more hydrocolloid tape to maintain the seal.

- Keep in mind that hydrocolloid tapes cannot be worn in the shower, so you'll need to remove or protect them before bathing.

- Check your insurance policy, as hydrocolloid tapes and related supplies are typically covered.
