I don't itch under my barrier strips or around them often, but when I do, it's intense. Does everyone itch? Which anti-itch product have you found most helpful, if any?

My skin will react to some adhesives and not others, so if you're itching, I'd say you're having an allergic reaction. My current batch of barrier strips may leave my skin a little pink but no itching. I had an allergic reaction to the Hollister flange, so I stay away from any Hollister adhesive products, but that's me.

Well,  I  hit the two year mark. I went back and read my posts from when I first found this site. I was very fortunate in that I stumbled upon it only 4 weeks post op. I have said many times that this community really saved me. The first 2 weeks after my surgery I shut down completely. It wasn't until about the 3rd week that my son came in to my room, flicked on the light and told me I was going to have to get back to living because I was scaring him. I had fallen into such a depression.  He  ticked me off,  but it also made me stop and think- what was I going to do? Feel sorry for myself and sulk, or be grateful I was alive.

I've re-read my journals from that time and it was after my son kicked my butt, so to speak, I took an honest inventory and had to dig deeper than I've ever had to. I mean, I had survived a pretty nasty divorce, after a pretty crappy marriage and that was tough. But this was different. I felt like I was now a handicapped person who would be limited in their life and be looked at as a freak. My mental state was precarious, at best.

But then I found this site. I just lurked a bit before posting. I read so many of the other stories and I started to see just how full my life can be, I was not handicapped,  and certainly not a freak! The stories of survival, the sense of humor, the support and compassion was inspiring.  It was then I made myself get out of the dark, and get my sh*t together.

Not all rainbows and sunshine at first, hardly! But with grace from myself - to myself, and the kindness and willingness of the folks here to be supportive, non judgemental and openly share intimate details about their life circumstances,  l not only survived but thrived.

I think of all the years I had suffered with such extreme pain, barely functioning,  and the many hospital stays and how that is all behind me now.  (All fingers, toes, and legs crossed that I never have to go near a hospital for myself ever again. I think I'd rather have a fork stuck in my eye. I loathe every about them.)

So, to everyone who has been a part of this journey with me, to say thank you is not enough. I'm forever grateful to know you all.  My Angels, each one of you.

And as the Grateful Dead famously said,

"what a long strange trip it's been!"

Im so happy I'm tripping with you all.

I use Benadryl tablets and apply an ice pack. If it's really bad, I remove everything and put cortisone cream and Canesten on my skin and let it absorb for twenty minutes while lying down. Wash it off with a mild soap so it's not greasy. I use Brava barrier cream and an antifungal powder and apply my flange. Don't use cortisone too often as it thins the skin.

I get occasional itching like that. For me, it is usually a yeast reaction on the skin. I crust with Desonex, and that cures it.

Hi, my name is Richard. I've had an ostomy for 16 years and have helped countless people troubleshoot skin issues. If you feel itching around your stoma, that's your first clue your seal is breaking and waste is irritating your skin. Change your appliance as soon as you can — waiting will just make your skin red and sore, and harder to seal next time.

Use a skin barrier ring to keep the seal tight, and add barrier strips on any red or irritated spots to help them heal. Wearing an ostomy support band reduces leaks, protects skin, and improves comfort — studies even show it can improve quality of life.

DM me anytime for more tips — I'm always happy to help.

Hi Richard!

Thank you for your suggestions. I am not itching near the stoma. I don't think there is leakage. My itching seems to be caused by adhesive from C-strips (barrier strips). I have 2 sizes, narrow and XL. I had the narrow ones on, and now today I changed my pouch and have used the XL strips. It feels better at the moment. I use the 3M Cavilon barrier film and like it. The nurse ordered me barrier cream also, Cavilon, so I tried it but used too much and then had to start over. I do have barrier rings but have only used them once, so I am not yet comfortable working with them. I also use a pouch that has belt tabs and do use belts. I am going to try the band you suggest. So far, it's been an easy adjustment having an ostomy, but the itching is awful. I hope I can nip that in the bud.

Very helpful

When I use Brava barrier cream, I put it on and rub it in for a minute, then leave it while I get my stuff ready. Then I dampen a paper towel and gently wipe the skin and dry thoroughly. I find if I rush, that's when I have trouble, so I organize everything before I start.

Hi Richard,

I just read your comments regarding rashes and itching. I developed my first rash 10 days after my ileostomy. I am now 20 days post-op, and my rash is still going strong.

I read about a product called HyTape. HyTape is a zinc oxide product. It is marketed to ostomates to wear under the wafer.

I was wondering, with your 16 years of experience, if you have ever heard of HyTape or know someone who has used it?

Thanks in advance!

I've not heard of Hy tape before. However, zinc oxide is used for diaper rashes and would probably be great for fungal skin rashes. I'd try it in your situation.
