Brown Residue on Healed Barbie Butt: Seeking Advice

This topic is about a person who has had a permanent colostomy since 2021 and has noticed an intermittent brown or yellowish discharge from the area where their anus used to be, known as the "Barbie-butt" closure. Although doctors have assured them that there is no visible opening and that it is not stool, the discharge is still concerning. They are seeking advice from others who might have experienced something similar. Here are some helpful insights and advice:

1. Possible pinhole leak: There might be a tiny, hard-to-see opening in the scar line. A wound-care nurse or surgeon with good lighting and magnification might be needed to find it.

2. Collect evidence methodically:
- Place folded tissue or gauze against the area to pinpoint where the discharge is coming from.
- Save a sample of the discharge and ask your doctor to analyze it to understand its composition.
- Use a mirror, camera, or strong magnification to inspect the scar yourself, as even tiny follicles can cause issues.

3. Seek thorough medical review: If your current doctors say everything is fine, consider getting a second opinion from a colorectal surgeon or wound specialist who is willing to investigate further.

4. Cauterization can help: One person with a similar issue found relief when a surgeon's intern used salicylic acid to cauterize and seal tiny holes between stitches, stopping the leakage without needing further surgery.

5. Hygiene matters: Regular bathing or showering can help reduce the risk of infection while the area heals or after any cauterization.

6. Weight and tissue changes: Gaining a little weight or having additional soft tissue around the buttocks might naturally close small gaps in the scar over time.
