Severe Gas Pains - Seeking Relief for Possible Blockage

This topic is about dealing with severe gas pain and a suspected blockage in an ostomy. The person experiencing this discomfort was trying to find ways to relieve the pain and get things moving again. Here are some helpful tips and insights shared by others:

1. **Osmotic Laxatives**:
- MiraLAX (polyethylene glycol 3350) can help by drawing water into the bowel to loosen stool.

2. **Physical Positions and Exercises**:
- Get on all fours and sway your hips side-to-side, tuck and lift your pelvis while breathing deeply.
- While seated, pull one knee toward your chest and gently twist your torso left and right.
- Lying on your left side can provide consistent relief.
- Try a gentle abdominal massage around the stoma and focus on deep-belly breathing.
- A warm bath or using a heating pad while massaging your abdomen can also help.

3. **Beverages to Break Blockages or Disperse Gas**:
- Drinking a small bottle of regular (sugar-sweetened) Coca-Cola quickly might help.
- Hot decaf green tea can be soothing.
- If you're hesitant about cola, try fruit juices like pear, cherry, or cranberry.

4. **Hydration and Electrolytes**:
- Keep up a high fluid intake, but include electrolyte solutions to avoid hyponatremia, which can occur if you drink too much plain water.

5. **Diet Adjustments and Long-term Prevention**:
- Having daily whole-grain cereal and a Premier Protein drink helped one person loosen output and prevent blockages.
- Regularly consuming yogurt or oral probiotics can reduce gas.
- Chew your food thoroughly and maintain steady hydration to prevent future obstructions.

6. **Warning Signs and When to Seek Medical Help**:
- If you experience rapid abdominal distension, persistent severe pain, or minimal/no output for about 12 hours despite self-care, it's recommended to go to the emergency room. You might need an NG tube or further treatment.
