Struggling with Appliance Durability - Seeking Suggestions

This topic is about someone who is facing challenges with the durability of their ostomy appliances, especially given their very active lifestyle. They used to have appliances that lasted longer, but now they are experiencing leaks much sooner, which is disrupting their daily activities. They are looking for advice on how to find an appliance that can keep up with their active routine.

Here are some helpful suggestions and insights:

1. Consider trying a convex barrier instead of a flat one. Many people have found that convex systems can last between 4 to 7 days. This type of barrier can be particularly helpful if the stoma is flush with the skin or if there are small skin folds that might cause leaks.

2. Check for any changes that might be affecting the wear time. Things like scars near the stoma, slight weight changes, or a developing hernia can impact the seal. It might be a good idea to have these checked by an ostomy nurse or a colorectal surgeon.

3. You might want to sample some Convatec products. Their two-piece systems, like Esteem and Natura, are known to provide 4 to 5 days of wear time.

4. Some specific Coloplast options have been reported to last between 3 to 7 days. For example, the Coloplast 1-piece drainable #16733 used with a wide adhesive protective ring, and the Coloplast Sensura Mio Click two-piece system, which can be paired with a Stealth Belt for extra support.

5. Adding a thin barrier ring under the wafer can help improve the seal and fill in any tiny gaps in the skin.

6. Consider using security accessories if needed. A Stealth Belt or a similar ostomy belt, along with extra tape around the wafer edge, can help reinforce the seal during intense activities.

7. If these suggestions don't work, it might be beneficial to consult with an experienced colorectal surgeon or an ostomy nurse who specializes in working with active patients. They can help reassess the stoma shape, appliance fit, and skin condition.
