Finding the Best ORS Packets on Amazon

This topic is all about choosing the right oral rehydration solution (ORS) to stay properly hydrated, especially when you're on the go. ORS is important because it helps your body absorb water effectively, which is crucial for those with an ostomy. Here are some helpful tips and insights:

1. If you're looking for ready-made options, DripDrop ORS powder is a popular choice. Many people find it dissolves well and doesn't cause issues with ostomy pouches.

2. Understanding why ORS is effective:
- The right balance of glucose and sodium in ORS helps your body absorb water instead of losing it, which is especially important for those with an ostomy.
- Be cautious with hypertonic drinks like regular soda or very sweet fluids, as they can increase dehydration by pulling water from your body.
- Hypotonic drinks, such as plain water or unsweetened tea, can also lead to dehydration by drawing electrolytes out of your body.

3. If you prefer a DIY approach, it's more affordable and allows you to adjust the taste:
- The World Health Organization (WHO) standard ORS recipe for 1 liter of water is 25 g (6 tsp) of sugar and 4.5 g (¾ tsp) of table salt.
- For a better-tasting option, the WHO "reduced osmolality" ORS uses 25 g (6 tsp) of sugar and 3 g (½ tsp) of table salt per liter.
- Pre-packaged ORS sachets usually contain between 13.5–25 g of sugar and ½–¾ tsp of salt per liter.
- For a quick mix on the go, use 7 sugar packets and 4–6 salt packets in 1 liter of water.
- Alternatively, 7 oz of regular cola provides about 25 g of sugar, and you can add the correct amount of salt.

4. Adjusting to the taste:
- ORS might taste like seawater initially, so start with a diluted mix and gradually increase the strength as you get used to it.
- Over time, you might find that very sweet drinks become less appealing, while ORS becomes more palatable.

5. Cost considerations:
- Making your own ORS solution is cost-effective, at about USD 0.44 per liter for someone who drinks around 4 liters daily.

6. If you're near St. Louis, consider visiting a nutrition store in O’Fallon for personalized advice on ORS products.
