Red Bumps Near Stoma: Inflammation and Concerns

This topic is about someone experiencing red bumps near their stoma, which are causing concern due to their appearance and discomfort. The bumps are similar in color and texture to the stoma, have increased in number, and feel inflamed. The person has a history of multiple surgeries and hernias, and they are feeling anxious about these skin changes, especially with an upcoming colonoscopy. Here are some insights and advice shared by others:

1. Possible Pyoderma Gangrenosum:
- A person with Ulcerative Colitis experienced similar red bumps that sometimes turned into painful ulcers and bled. Their surgeon identified these as Pyoderma Gangrenosum, a condition that can occur in people with inflammatory bowel disease.
- It is recommended to seek medical evaluation from a dermatologist or colorectal surgeon if the bumps worsen, ulcerate, or bleed.

2. Mechanical irritation from the appliance:
- Another person was advised by an ostomy nurse that their red bumps were due to friction or pressure from the flange (skin barrier) of their appliance.
- The nurse suggested using a cushioning paste to protect the area, although the results varied. The bumps caused minimal bleeding and little pain.

3. General support and encouragement:
- It's important to live life fully, stay positive, and seek professional advice when uncertain about health concerns.
