How Often Do You Change Your Ileostomy Bag?

This topic is about how often people with an ileostomy or other types of ostomies change their appliances, such as pouches and wafers. The originator of the discussion can wear their one-piece pouch for about five days and is curious about others' experiences. Here are some insights and advice shared by others:

- Typical wear times for different products:
1. Hollister 2-piece: Wafer lasts 5-7 days, with some users testing up to 12 days; the bag is changed daily.
2. Hollister 1-piece: Lasts 3-4 days before the area around the stoma softens.
3. Convatec 2-piece with convex base: Up to 6 days if showers are limited; some lose adhesion after one shower.
4. Pelican 1-piece drainable pouch with Eakin Slim Seals: 4-5 days with daily showers and no leaks.
5. Micro-skin one-piece pre-cut pouches: Around 4 days.
6. Coloplast Assura one-piece (urostomy) with Hollister Medical Adhesive: 11-12 days even with daily showers.
7. Closed-end bags are changed 1-3 times per day, even if the wafer/flange stays on longer.

- Techniques and products to extend wear time or improve security:
1. Use Eakin Cohesive Seals or Eakin Slim Seals around the stoma before applying the wafer.
2. Use a hair-dryer on low to dry skin thoroughly and warm the wafer for better adhesion.
3. Apply Smith & Nephew “Skin-Prep” spray or other barriers to make skin tackier.
4. "Picture frame" the wafer edges with clear or waterproof tape, reapplying as needed.
5. Use Hydroframe Flexible Hydrocolloid Strips to reinforce wafer edges and reduce leaks.
6. Apply Stomahesive Paste by Convatec around the inner flange.
7. Use Hollister Medical Adhesive spray as a skin prep under Coloplast pouches.
8. Flush a drainable pouch with water at each emptying to reduce odor and keep it clean.

- Showering and bathing tips:
1. Many users shower daily without removing the wafer; warmth can improve adhesion.
2. If the wafer loosens, try picture-framing tape, Hydroframes, or remove only the bag while leaving the wafer on.
3. Thoroughly dry skin with a hair-dryer on low before reattaching or resealing; avoid moisturizing soaps or lotions near the wafer site.
4. Some users remove the entire appliance for the shower and apply a new one afterward, while others leave the flange on for multiple showers.

- Factors that can shorten wear time:
1. Heavy sweating, tight clothing, or an ostomy belt can lift wafer edges.
2. Moisturizing body washes and lotions near the wafer reduce adhesion; use plain soap and keep lotions away from the area.
3. Weight changes can affect the need for convexity or extra sealing rings, so reassess the fit if you've gained or lost weight.

- Alternative products mentioned:
1. Schena EZ Clean system worked for washing but had poor pouch adhesion for one user.
2. Hollister’s new 2-piece drainable bag with “three-fold-up” closure received positive feedback for ease of use and odor control.

These shared experiences highlight that wear times can vary from 1 day to almost 2 weeks, depending on the system, care routine, and individual factors. There are many methods available to improve both adhesion and confidence.
