What foods can I eat after ileostomy? Also, advice on gas and acid reflux?

The topic is about preparing for life after an ileostomy, which is a surgical procedure where the small intestine is diverted through an opening in the abdomen, called a stoma, because the large intestine is no longer in use. This can be a daunting experience, so here are some practical tips and advice to help ease the transition:

1. **Diet and Eating Habits**
- Start with soft, well-chewed foods in small, frequent meals. Over time, you can gradually introduce more fibrous foods, but do so slowly and one at a time.
- Be cautious with foods that can cause gas or blockages, such as nuts, popcorn, mushrooms, grape skins, tomato skins, dried beans, corn, leafy greens, raw vegetables, onions, pulled pork, stone fruits, and carrots. Chew these thoroughly, eat them in moderation, and pair them with fluids.

2. **Managing Gas**
- The pouch can inflate with gas, so vent or empty it regularly. Many modern pouches have filters to help reduce this. Avoiding carbonated drinks and using Beano enzyme pills can also help.

3. **Dealing with Blockages**
- Early on, blockages can occur. Signs include cramping and minimal output. If this happens, lie down, hydrate, and eat soluble starches like potatoes to help break down the food.

4. **Skin and Acidic Output Care**
- After surgery, stool and acid will exit through the stoma, not the rectum, which usually resolves perianal burning. Protect the skin around the stoma by keeping the wafer snug and using barrier sprays or wipes.

5. **Product Recommendations**
- Consider using products like Coloplast 2-piece systems, Convatec Sur-Fit, Hollister M9 drops, and NA’Scent deodorant. Free samples are often available from manufacturers.

6. **Practical Tips**
- Cut the wafer opening to fit the stoma without constricting it. Apply paste around the hole and press the wafer firmly, keeping it warm under clothing.
- Regularly check the pouch for volume and gas, and empty it when it’s about one-third to half full to prevent leaks.
- Be aware of dehydration signs like cramps, dry mouth, and dizziness, and keep rehydration fluids handy.
- Always carry a spare pouch, disposal bag, and odor eliminator.

7. **Emotional and Lifestyle Support**
- Remember, an ileostomy is life-saving. A positive attitude can make a big difference.
- Seek guidance from a certified WOC/ostomy nurse for personalized support.
- Many people return to activities they love, like motorcycling, swimming, and dancing. Some even give their stoma a name!
- Share your experience with a trusted friend or family member to reduce stress.
