Five Fucking Years

This topic is about someone reflecting on the five-year anniversary of an emergency surgery that resulted in a permanent ileostomy. Initially, the plan was for a temporary ileostomy with a future J-pouch, but due to complications, the ileostomy became permanent. Here are some thoughts and advice shared by others who have been through similar experiences:

1. Anniversaries can bring back strong memories. Some people choose not to keep track of the exact dates to help lessen the intensity of any negative feelings, allowing them to fade more easily into the background.

2. Writing can be a powerful tool for processing emotions. Some find that expressing their feelings through rhyming verse helps them manage anger or sadness, effectively "closing the book" on those emotions so they don't overshadow daily life.

3. Humor and strong language can be healthy outlets for venting. Letting out anger, even with a few choice words, is often seen as better than keeping it bottled up inside.

4. Focusing on gratitude can be uplifting. Many people feel that their ostomy has ultimately saved their lives, and they encourage each other to remember this during challenging times.

5. Support from the community is always available. Long-term ostomates welcome newcomers to express their frustrations, whether through ranting, complaining, or having a "hissy fit," whenever they need to.
