The scourge of Pouchitis

This topic is about managing pouchitis in a de-functioned J-Pouch. A J-Pouch is a surgically created internal reservoir, and in this case, it is not connected to the anus but remains linked to the stoma. Sometimes, watery output from the stoma can seep into this unused pouch, causing inflammation known as pouchitis. Here are some insights and tips shared by someone dealing with this condition:

1. A recent episode of pouchitis was successfully treated with the antibiotic Flagyl (metronidazole), taken at a dose of 200 mg twice daily for five days.

2. To prevent pouchitis from recurring, the person uses three Absorbagel fluid-absorbing gel packs in their ostomy pouch each night. These packs help thicken the output from watery to a pudding-like consistency, preventing it from being drawn back into the internal J-Pouch.

3. Skipping the gel packs for even one night led to another bout of pouchitis, highlighting the importance of using them consistently every night.

4. The person shares that pouchitis can be very painful but encourages others to remain positive. They also mention enjoying the sunny weather in California, which adds a touch of positivity to their routine.

5. The gel packs not only help prevent pouchitis but also effectively stop regular leaks, contributing to an overall sense of well-being since resuming their nightly routine.
