Stoma Output Stops When Bag is Full - Anyone Else?

This topic is about a person who has noticed an interesting pattern with their ostomy pouch. They find that when the pouch is full, the stoma output seems to stop until the pouch is emptied. This allows them to sleep through the night without any leaks or pressure. They are curious if this is a common experience among others with an ostomy and if it might have any implications for future surgeries like a J-pouch.

Here are some insights and advice shared by others:

1. Some people have experienced pauses in output when their pouch is full, but it's generally considered unreliable and more a matter of luck. Relying on this can give a false sense of security.

2. It's normal for bowel activity to slow down overnight, which might make it seem like the output has stopped. However, factors like illness, food choices, or a sudden increase in output can disrupt this pattern and lead to leaks.

3. Ostomy pouches are designed to handle average output and be discreet. Counting on them to act as a reservoir is risky.

4. It's a good idea to practice waking up periodically to empty the pouch or at least release gas. Some people have successfully avoided leaks for many years by doing this.

5. Even with careful management, partial blockages or sudden high-volume output can still cause unexpected issues. Keeping the pouch from overfilling is the safest approach.
