Tax Disability Credit

This topic is about understanding eligibility for Canada's Disability Tax Credit (DTC) and AISH (Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped) benefits. The person sharing their experience recently discovered they could claim the DTC for past years, even though they hadn't worked for a while. They were also approved for AISH benefits, which were applied retroactively. Despite these supports, they continue to face physical challenges, such as fatigue and weakened abdominal muscles, and rely on a hernia belt for support, which unfortunately causes strain on their back and shoulders. Although they might look fine on the outside, daily life remains a struggle.

Here are some helpful insights and advice based on their experience:

1. They were advised to consider a medical-negligence lawsuit against their doctor for not ordering tests that could have prevented a long hospital stay. However, they are cautious about this step after hearing about a similar case that was lost, even with strong legal support.

2. A hospital social worker and information from a forum played a crucial role in informing them about AISH and other support options.

3. They didn't ask a specific question but expressed gratitude to the community for their guidance and mentioned they are slowly increasing their activity levels, like taking longer walks.

4. Regarding the Disability Tax Credit:
- It is a federal program by Revenue Canada (CRA) that offers a non-refundable tax credit to individuals with long-term impairments.
- For those outside Canada, it's recommended to check with their local tax authority, such as the IRS, for similar disability credits or deductions.
