Urostomy Tips and Tricks - Seeking Advice for Managing Stoma Issues

This topic is about managing the continuous flow of urine during urostomy appliance changes. If you're new to living with a urostomy, you might find that most resources focus on colostomies and ileostomies, which can be frustrating. One person shared their experience of dealing with a very small stoma that produces a strong, continuous urine stream, making it difficult to prepare new equipment without getting everything wet. They reached out to others for practical advice on how to manage this situation. Here are some helpful suggestions:

1. Use an irrigation sleeve as a temporary containment tunnel:
- Consider using the Coloplast 2-piece irrigation press plate along with the Coloplast Assura irrigation sleeve. This setup allows you to see and work on the stoma while directing urine straight into the toilet. The end of the sleeve can be folded and clipped to act as a short-term bag if needed.

2. Try the StomaGenie disposable capture device:
- This product can be found on the Stomagienics website and Amazon. It comes with a sizing chart and is designed to slip over the stoma to absorb or contain output during a change.
- As a DIY alternative, you can cut the outer plastic casing from a large veterinary or pharmacy hypodermic needle, plug one end with cotton batting, and use it as a mini containment tube.

3. Simple, low-tech methods:
- Hold folded toilet paper or tissue over the stoma while switching appliances to help manage the flow.
- Schedule appliance changes when your bladder is least active. You can also try avoiding fluids for a while beforehand to reduce the flow of urine.

These tips aim to make the process a bit easier and help you stay dry while managing your urostomy.
