Pouch Tearing - Tips for Avoiding Mishaps!

This topic is about dealing with issues related to Hollister pouches tearing while being emptied. The person sharing their experience had two instances where their older Hollister 2-piece pouch tore near the seal during emptying. Initially, they thought the flange had failed and changed the pouch, only to have the new one tear again. The tears happened near the Lock ’n Roll closure, and they are concerned that their abdominal surgery, which left a small skin roll beneath the stoma, might be contributing to the problem. They have appointments with their doctor and surgeon but are relieved these incidents happened at home.

Here are some helpful insights and advice from others who have faced similar issues:

1. Some users have noticed a recent manufacturing flaw in Hollister pouches, particularly near the seams of the Lock ’n Roll closure.
- Local support groups have contacted Hollister about this, and some have received compensation and replacement pouches.
- It's a good idea to take photos of any damaged pouches and email them to a Hollister representative to document the issue and request replacements.

2. If the problem continues, consider trying different brands:
- Convatec 2-piece systems are reported to have no tearing or leaks.
- Coloplast 2-piece systems are known for their strong seal and longer wear time.
- Salts Healthcare (UK) pouches have flanges with pre-cut “nicks” that fit better over abdominal rolls or extra tissue.

3. Before using a new Hollister pouch, inspect it carefully, especially the seam near the Lock ’n Roll closure and the clear section between the adhesive and coupling ring.

4. When emptying the pouch:
- Support it with one hand close to the flange and avoid pulling it sharply upward.
- Bend at the knees instead of the waist to prevent the pouch from creasing against the skin fold.

5. Maintaining or reducing weight can help reduce the depth of skin folds under the stoma, which can improve how the flange and pouch fit.

6. Until the tearing issue is resolved, keep spare clothing or access to laundry facilities handy, as most mishaps occur during physical movement or while emptying the pouch.
