Tips for Using Flat Wafers with a Small, Convex Stoma

This topic is about finding ways to fit a flat wafer for someone who has a small, convex stoma located very close to their belly button. This can be a bit tricky because conventional convex wafers might not seal properly in such a tight space. Here are some helpful tips and insights shared by others who have faced similar challenges:

1. If you continue to have issues, consider checking with your surgeon about the stoma's placement. Sometimes, if leakage is a persistent problem, revision surgery might be an option.

2. To level the area around your belly button:
- Fill the navel with ostomy paste before applying the wafer to create a smooth surface.
- Use a barrier sheet that covers the belly button completely, then place the wafer over it.

3. Modify the shape or position of the wafer:
- Cut the wafer opening off-center so that the adhesive part avoids the navel.
- Trim the wafer edges where they touch the navel, and reinforce the cut edge with medical or silicone tape, which is gentle on sensitive skin.

4. Use barrier rings and pastes to improve the seal and accommodate any shallow creases or folds.

5. Look into smaller or more flexible products:
- Some people have found success with Coloplast products, which have smaller baseplates. The "Coloplast Sensura Mio Flat Flex barrier" was mentioned as working well over a partially covered navel.
- Warm the Coloplast Sensura Mio Flat Flex barrier (for example, by holding it in your armpit) before use, then press it firmly for about 60 seconds to enhance adhesion. Its adhesive can be lifted and re-sealed multiple times.

6. Combine convexity and flexibility:
- An ostomy nurse might still suggest a deep-convex system even in tight spaces. Using silicone tape or a barrier ring can help adapt these products.

7. Seek professional and manufacturer support:
- Consult an ostomy nurse for personalized fitting advice and to decide whether you need convex, flat, or hybrid systems.
- Request samples from various companies like Coloplast, Hollister, and Convatec, and discuss your options with their product specialists.
