Managing Food and Blockages During Flare-Ups

Managing food and blockages during flare-ups with an ostomy can be quite challenging. When experiencing severe flare-ups, even solid foods can lead to painful blockages. Here's a simple approach and some helpful advice to navigate these situations:

- During severe flare-ups, it might be best to avoid all solid foods. Instead, rely on liquid nutrition drinks like Boost or Ensure for a few days until things settle down.

- Popcorn is often considered a risky food for those prone to blockages. Many people find it to be a "100% no-no," along with whole-kernel corn and corn-on-the-cob.

- However, experiences can vary. Some people can eat large amounts of popcorn without any issues, so it's important to test your own tolerance carefully.

- Portion control can be helpful. Some people limit themselves to a small handful of popcorn or lettuce and avoid consuming these foods in large quantities or too frequently.

- If you experience persistent or frequent blockages, it's not typical for most ostomates. If solid foods regularly cause severe restrictions, it might indicate an underlying issue that should be checked by a healthcare professional.

- Other high-fiber or insoluble foods like lettuce, bran, foods with seeds or skins, and mushrooms can also cause blockages. It's recommended to chew these foods thoroughly or avoid them altogether.

- Staying well-hydrated is crucial when eating any potentially problematic food, as it helps the food move through your system more easily.
