Preventing Stoma Leaks - Need Suggestions

This topic is all about finding ways to prevent chronic leaks from a stoma, which can be a frustrating issue for many people. The person seeking advice has been dealing with leaks for three years and is looking for practical solutions. Here are some helpful tips and insights that might make life a little easier:

1. Consult an Ostomy/Stoma Nurse:
- Schedule an in-person assessment at a hospital clinic or through a home-delivery service.
- Keep your current appliance on until the visit so the nurse can see any weak spots.
- Nurses can provide free samples of different products to try.

2. Check Barrier Fit and Cutting:
- Cut the wafer hole to fit snugly around the stoma without touching it.
- Ensure the hole is not too small or uneven, as this can cause lifting and leaks.
- Avoid folds or wrinkles in the skin under the barrier by standing, sitting, or lying down—whichever keeps the skin flat.

3. Level Uneven Skin and Hernia Dips:
- Use convex wafers along with additional leveling techniques:
- Brava rings can be cut in half and placed under low spots.
- "Slim" barrier rings should align exactly with the wafer opening.
- Apply stoma paste around the flange hole and under low areas.

4. Extra Security Options:
- Consider wearing an ostomy belt to keep the pouch flat and sealed.
- Use supporting tapes, like those from Coloplast, around the flange for added security.

5. Skin Preparation and Cleanliness:
- Take a completely "naked" shower on change day to remove all residue from powders, barriers, and paste. Dry your skin thoroughly before applying a new system.
- Ensure the surrounding skin is very clean for maximum adhesion.
- Allow peristomal skin some air exposure occasionally to prevent irritation.

6. Filter and Bag Tips:
- If filter blow-outs are causing leaks, cover the filter with the supplied round sticker, leave a little air in the bag, and add lubricant inside.

7. Lubricant/Deodorant Inside the Pouch:
- Use products like Adapt Lubricating Deodorant to reduce sticking, keep output away from the stoma, and help minimize odor.

8. Diet and Timing for Clean Changes:
- Change appliances in the early morning after eating lightly the night before to reduce output.
- Rinse the pouch regularly and limit high-odor foods, like onions, to control smell.

These tips involve using various products such as SenSura Mio Convex bags, Coloplast tapes, Brava rings, Salts rings, "Slim" ConvaTec barrier rings, Hollister pouches and barriers, Adapt Lubricating Deodorant, and stoma paste.
