Electric Razor for Stoma Care - Men's Experiences?

This topic is about men who have an ostomy and are considering the best way to shave the skin around their stoma. One man usually removes his appliance in the shower and uses a regular razor, but he's curious if using an electric razor might be easier or better. Here's what others have shared about their experiences and advice:

1. Many men have found success using electric hair clippers, beard trimmers, or general electronic shavers for shaving around the stoma.

2. Electric shavers and clippers are often safer than blade razors:
- They reduce the risk of accidental cuts.
- Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nurses (WOCN) recommend electric shavers to avoid tiny cuts that can irritate the skin under the barrier.
- There's a guideline from WOCN on basic ostomy skin care that supports this advice.

3. Tips for using electric shavers:
- One person uses an empty toilet-roll tube to protect the stoma while shaving.
- A bikini-style electric razor can shave closely to the stoma and help prevent ingrown hairs.

4. Experiences with blade razors:
- Some men prefer the closeness of a standard razor shave, but they emphasize wearing glasses and shaving during every shower to prevent short hairs from sticking to the adhesive.
- Shaving cream with a razor works for some, though they hadn't considered electric options.
- One person switched to an electric bikini razor after experiencing ingrown hairs with a regular razor.

5. For those with minimal hair, shaving is needed only occasionally, and sometimes a stoma nurse helps with the initial clipping.

6. On a lighter note, someone humorously suggested using duct tape, though it was not actually used.
