Small Gap Between Stoma and Skin - Should I Be Concerned?

This topic is about a person who recently had ileostomy surgery and noticed a small gap where the stoma meets the skin. Initially, a stoma nurse said it was normal, but the gap has since grown slightly larger. The person is wondering if this is still part of the normal healing process or if it needs medical attention.

Here are some helpful insights and advice:

1. Keep an eye on the gap. If it gets bigger, turns red, starts to smell, or becomes painful, it's important to seek medical advice quickly.

2. Many people think this might be a case of mucocutaneous separation, which is when the skin separates from the stoma.

3. It's recommended to see a surgeon rather than just relying on a stoma or wound-care nurse. This is because:
- There is a risk of infection if fecal matter enters the gap.
- Surgeons can check for deeper issues like fistula formation.

4. Some people believe that any separation should be checked by a doctor and treated if necessary.

5. There are stories of similar situations where the gap healed on its own in about six weeks. Sometimes, dissolving stitches can cause small gaps that eventually close.

6. For caring for mucocutaneous separation, you might try:
- The "crusting" technique, which involves using layers of stoma powder and barrier spray, along with a barrier ring to help protect and heal the area.
- Hydrofera Blue foam, which can be placed under the wafer and has helped others with similar issues.

7. Be alert for signs of a stomal fistula, such as output leaking from the gap, which would require immediate surgical attention.
