Inflamed Ileum - Seeking Experiences and Advice

This topic is about someone who has been experiencing ongoing pain and issues after stoma surgery. They woke up with severe abdominal pain, a swollen abdomen, and very watery ostomy output. After visiting the emergency department, a scan showed that the section of the ileum leading to the stoma was inflamed and infected. They were treated with steroids and discharged after three days, but without a clear explanation. Since then, they have continued to feel unwell and are reaching out to see if others have had similar experiences.

Here are some helpful pieces of advice and insights for anyone in a similar situation:

1. Instead of relying on the emergency department for follow-up care, reach out to the colorectal surgical team that performed your surgery.
2. Find and contact the stoma or colorectal specialist nurse in the department. Their contact information is often available under the surgeon’s or NHS department’s details.
3. Call the secretary or administrative contact to request a prompt review appointment. Be prepared to be persistent, as NHS backlogs are common.
4. Be firm yet polite when communicating. Clearly express the urgency of your ongoing symptoms and ensure that your concerns are taken seriously.
