Ileostomy to Colostomy - Seeking Advice and Reassurance

This topic is about someone who has been living with an ileostomy for three years and is now preparing for surgery to transition to a colostomy. This involves reconnecting the small bowel, repairing a hernia, and creating a new colostomy on the opposite side of the abdomen. Understandably, they are feeling anxious due to past surgical complications and are seeking practical advice for life with a colostomy. Here are some insights and tips shared by others:

- Colostomy output is generally thicker and less acidic than ileostomy output, which often means fewer skin issues.
- A 2-piece system, like the Hollister, can work well. Some people have reported no leaks with this system.
- A common routine is to change the wafer every 7 days and the bag every few days, ideally when the stoma is less active, such as in the morning.
- The volume of output can vary greatly. Some days there might be no output for 48 hours, while other days the bag may need to be emptied twice in one hour.

- Hernias can still occur even with a good wafer, but they don't always lead to leaks. Wearing a support belt right after surgery and for several months might help, although it doesn't guarantee prevention.

- Consider asking your surgeon about the possibility of colostomy irrigation once you've healed. Successful irrigation can allow you to wear just a stoma cap or patch instead of a full pouch.

- Many people find that life with a colostomy becomes easier over time and often prefer it to an ileostomy. Staying calm and optimistic is important, as many initial worries tend to fade with experience.
