Skin Reacting Badly with Coloplast Products

This topic is about dealing with skin irritation that can develop after using Coloplast ostomy products for a long time. The person sharing their experience has been using these products since 2013 without issues until recently, when they started experiencing significant skin problems around their stoma. They are seeking advice from others who have faced similar issues and found solutions.

Here are some helpful suggestions and insights shared by others:

1. Try using a skin-protective wipe or film first. Many people have found that using barrier skin wipes for a few changes can stop the irritation.
- Some recommended brands include Cavilon (3M) barrier film wipes/spray and Silesse (Convatec) silicone barrier wipes.

2. If barrier wipes do not help, consider switching to a different product line, as different adhesives might solve the problem.
- Convatec offers two adhesive formulas: Stomahesive and Durahesive.
- New Hope offers a pouch with no adhesive, which might be suitable for those with severe adhesive allergies.

3. Some users have found that Coloplast’s own skin-barrier rings or wipes can be counter-productive, as they may cause the adhesive to break down. Switching to Cavilon or Silesse has helped eliminate this issue for some.

4. For temporary relief from mild redness or shaving rash, consider using:
- A thin layer of calamine lotion, allowing it to dry before fitting a new pouch.
- Friar’s Balsam, applied in the same way (note that it may sting briefly on broken skin).
- Sudocrem for a short period to clear up minor irritation.

5. A general rule shared by several members is that if the reaction is due to a true adhesive allergy rather than simple irritation from leakage or shaving, the only lasting solution is to switch to a product that uses a different adhesive.
