Favorite Ostomy Deodorants and Odor Solutions

This topic is all about finding the best ways to manage and control odors from ostomy pouches. People have shared their favorite deodorants and other tips to help keep things fresh. Here are some of the suggestions and insights:

1. Hollister M9, available as drops or a spray, is highly recommended as an effective pouch deodorant and odor eliminator. Some people prefer using the spray as an air freshener because the drops didn't work well with their output.

2. Hollister Adapt Lubricating Deodorant is mentioned as a good alternative to M9.

3. Coloplast Brava Lubricating Deodorant is praised for its precise dosing and effectiveness, though it can be pricey and is limited to one bottle per month under Medicare. Many users extend their supply by using other methods, like Tic Tacs.

4. "Be Free" deodorant received positive feedback from one user before they switched to using hydrogen peroxide.

5. Hydrogen peroxide, using 10–20 ml in the pouch, is an affordable DIY deodorizer and can be combined with Brava for lubrication.

6. Breath-mint and candy options, such as Peppermint Lifesavers, Tic Tacs, and straight peppermint oil, are used by some to help mask odors.

7. Dietary strategies can also play a role:
- Foods that may reduce odor include blueberries, buttermilk, parsley, tomato juice, orange juice, yogurt, cranberry juice, spinach, and peppermint oil.
- Foods that might increase odor include asparagus, cod-liver oil, strong cheese, coffee, garlic, prunes, beans, cucumbers, green peppers, radishes, Brussels sprouts, eggs, milk, turnips, cabbage, fish, onions, certain vitamins/drugs, alcoholic drinks, and broccoli.
- Taking 60 mg/day of chlorophyll tablets is another method used to lessen odor.

8. For bathroom or room management:
- A quick bleach spray in the toilet bowl after emptying can help.
- Automatic aerosol deodorizers that activate every 30 minutes are useful.
- Lighting candles or striking matches after emptying can also be effective.
- Good ventilation or using a fan when possible is recommended.

9. Practical notes:
- Most manufacturers offer free sample sachets, so it's a good idea to try several products before purchasing in large quantities.
- Combining a lubricating deodorant with dietary awareness and simple bathroom tactics often provides the best overall results.
