PIC-A-DILLY POSSIBILITY

Seeking to find an answer for a problem I have whenever I wear a 2-piece ConvaTec Sur-fit Natural Durahesive System….hmmm Sur-fit short for “causing a sure fit every time I use it”…..anyway, back to my issue/inquiry….
Once the snap-on bag is removed, there are some offensive cling-ons on the bottom and sides of the baseplate which tend to be difficult to remove while on the throne…I would like to have a very clean baseplate before snapping on the new bag.
I have thought about a possible solution (a DIY remedy) by using my Waterpik to clean around the edges (not to worry, I never use it anymore for my teeth). It does have quite a bit of power, and I can already imagine my stoma quivering at the sight of it, but I would take careful aim at only the areas of infraction.
So my question to all of my fellow Ostomates is:

1. Have you ever tried this
2. How dangerous do you think it might be (I will add here, I no longer imbibe in adult beverages and my vision is still decent).
Thanks in advance….jb

If it were me, I would use a Waterpik without a second thought. My stoma has taken much more abuse than that over the years and is still going strong. My Waterpik also has a brush attachment; the brush would soon discolor, but replacements are cheap online.

I began my Urostomy life February 27th, 2023...a month and a half ago. I stumbled upon this site from another on Youtube and website called VeganOstomy and between that site and this one, most of my fear and worry of not having any answers other than calling the Dr's office recording menu and hoping to hear back in the next day or two for an answer to leaks, skin irritations etc, or just feeling alone and the "no one understands" thoughts I had to look forward to in my mind were all put to rest by these two websites and the community here at MaO!! I have been here for a few weeks now, and the help and support offered by the members here is just amazing!! The information and support is absolutely priceless for anyone recently out of their surgery and have tons of questions or had it for years...sit down...have a good read and you will see for yourself!!

Hubz was using a squeezable bottle that reaches up inside the end opening to clean his bag after emptying. The end has 13 pinholes that spray in every direction and out the end. It cleaned everything off the baseplate using plain tepid water, but the water ended up getting behind the base plate and pushing output with it. We called it the 'stoma bidet,' but stopped using it at the recommendation of the Ostomy Nurse as his skin under the ring was getting ouchy and red.

So now he puts water in the bag before he empties, which loosens everything and rinses a couple of times as he rubs material away from the area between the stoma and ring. His skin stays happy now.

Whether I wear a one-piece or a two-piece, I always pour water into the bag after each empty. Then I put a couple of squirts of baby oil in the bag. The one-piece I change every other day; the two-piece has the snap-off bag that I change and discard, but the baseplate remains for a day or two more. This is when I may use a pic-a-dilly, aka water pic. Not sure if it's a good idea, though. —jb

I honestly don't see a problem with trying it. What's the worst that can happen? You make a mess, or the seal is compromised, and you need to change the wafer sooner than you'd planned? As Ben said, our stomas have been through much worse.

G-Day JB,

Am I reading this right? Do you use a non-drainable bag? I am wondering why you take the bag off the base plate and not just drain it from the bottom of the bag. I have a two-piece Hollister drainable, and I just change the whole thing, base and bag, every Monday and every Friday. I just open the end and fill it with some water each time I drain it and swish it around, and this not only cleans my bag but stops pancaking as well.

I hope you are well, JB, and having a good day.

Regards, IGGIE

I've learned a lot here, thanks guys… the frequency of changing seems to vary a lot, all the ideas sound cool, and I didn't know what pancaking was lol… knowledge bomb thank you

Update…I have decided not to try this. The backwash on this method may cause much angst, and I am not willing to even try it. I think a safer, cleaner method might be something like a squirt ketchup bottle (without the ketchup, of course). I actually prefer my one-piece getup as it is so much less bulk on my midsection and much more comfortable. I only revert to the two-piece when I have a rash in the outside area—probably caused by tape on the one piece. jb

Thinking this through, you are absolutely right…may be messy and break the seal…not to mention my Waterpik would never again be used for my teeth!😬

I lean over the can and empty my bag, and then wash it out in the sink. If I just take my bag off, I use baby wipes to clean the appliance around the stoma, then attach a new bag. A Waterpik sounds splashy.
