My husband had temporary ileostomy surgery one week ago and has had constant nausea. Zofran helps a little. He is not drinking enough, which is critical. Has anyone had this problem, and how long does it last?

Hi CJ, welcome to the site. This may sound odd, but after my last surgery, it helped if I got up and walked around, and when I was able to, I walked around my backyard for the fresh air.

This group has been my go-to during my loneliest hours whenever I've had a "bag blowout" at 3am and there was no one else in the world to talk to.

Because it's a global community, there's always someone here to lend an ear, provide advice, and just hold my hand if that's all I need.

Sure, there's also a lot of camaraderie, fun topics, and laughs, but the main reason I come here is for the total acceptance I get from the members. No one else on the planet could possibly "get" what I'm going through, not even my loving husband or supportive family.

The "Meet an Ostomate" forum is definitely a one-of-a-kind family, which I am very proud to belong to.

Post-surgical nausea is very common. I struggled with this for weeks. Talk to his doctor. His electrolytes may be out of balance, which can make the symptoms worse. They may also consider adding Compazine to the Zofram or even an appetite stimulant.

I like Ron's suggestion of moving more as well.

G-Day cjgershman,

I know it's hard, but he has to try and drink, and the drink needs to have some electrolytes in it. Just water will flush all his electrolytes out of his body. You're a good lady looking after your husband; take him for a walk in the garden and then make him a nice drink. He really needs to drink about 2 liters a day; that's about 67 oz, I think. I wish you guys would go to Metric; it's a lot easier.

LOL, truly we need metric. As a scientist, all I use at work is metric, and it's so much easier.

2 L = 67 oz. Normally, I hear 64 oz quoted, but it's close enough; that's eight 8 oz glasses.

G-Day Susan,

I remember years ago NASA had a problem because some parts they needed were made in other countries that used metric and the US used imperial. And often the parts would not fit together because they were off by tiny amounts because of the conversion.

I think America is the only place on Earth now still using imperial.

Hope you're having a great day IGGIE 🦘

Try getting him to eat saltine crackers; the salt will help with electrolytes, and then try to get him drinking a little bit at a time throughout the day. I like the idea of getting up and moving around a bit too. Moving will help heal as well as may help with the nausea. Take it one day at a time. If you have to, one hour at a time. One minute at a time. Make sure he is eating bland foods, ones that won't upset his tummy.

When you look at the world in total, the US has not got any problems unless people make their problems out to be bigger than they are.

Sorry Marecat17,

I thought you were meaning problems with Trump; I was under the impression that he was doing a good job.

Sorry if I made it sound political. I don't want to upset you.

Thank you.

He is walking around a little more and drinking Gatorade.

He tends to feel worse after eating and is barely eating.

Get some protein shakes like Ensure. Maybe he can get those down more comfortably. He needs the protein to heal.

You could also try scrambled eggs and Greek yogurt, as these are high-protein semi-solids.

I think his digestive tract just needs more time to settle down. It probably took a month to six weeks for my appetite to return to normal.
