Ilieostomy

This topic is about someone who is marking their one-year anniversary of living with an ileostomy. Initially, doctors gave them only a year to live due to severe health issues, including end-stage kidney failure. They now receive infusions three times a week but are experiencing significant weight loss, down to 99 pounds. While they generally maintain a positive outlook and believe in miracles, they sometimes find it hard to keep up a cheerful facade and are seeking genuine understanding from others who know what it's like to live with an ostomy.

Here are some pieces of advice and insights shared by others:

- You are in a community that understands, so feel free to be honest and let go of the "fake smile." This is a safe, judgment-free space.
- Take your recovery one day at a time and allow yourself to experience both good and bad moments. Patience and time are important.
- Consider sharing your experiences and lessons with others. Offering support can be healing and may help ease your emotional burden.
- Many people with long-term ileostomies face ongoing weight challenges. Regular light exercise, like walking, combined with high-calorie snacks, can be beneficial.
- For those looking to gain significant weight:
1. Aim for a very high daily caloric intake. One person found success with a target of 4,000–4,500 calories.
2. Keep a detailed food journal to track what you eat and the results.
- Surviving beyond the initial prognosis is a significant achievement. Take time to acknowledge and celebrate this victory.
- Reach out whenever you need support. Many members are willing to offer ongoing support and a listening ear.
