Can we eat mochi? Will it cause blockage?

The topic at hand is about whether eating Japanese mochi, which is a sweet treat made from rice flour and often filled with red bean paste, could cause a bowel blockage for someone with an ostomy. Here are some insights and advice shared by people with similar experiences:

1. Many people with ileostomies or continent ileostomies have enjoyed various types of mochi, such as traditional red-bean, sesame-coated, matcha-flavored, ice-cream-filled, and even soft "mochi candy" from Lidl, without any issues.

2. It's a good idea to start with a small amount and make sure to chew it well. Blockages often happen when too much of one food is eaten at once. There is a medical case review that suggests mochi can cause obstruction if not thoroughly chewed.

3. Moderation is key. Try a small portion first and avoid eating a large quantity, like "30 of them at once."

4. Be cautious with the texture. Mochi is very glutinous and sticky, so not chewing it properly can increase the risk of obstruction.

5. Some people have been advised to avoid beans altogether, but many find that moderate amounts of sweet bean paste in mochi do not cause problems.

6. Several long-term ostomates report that only large amounts of insoluble-fiber vegetables or excess nuts have caused them blockages, not mochi.

7. For those unfamiliar, mochi is a rice cake that comes in various flavors. More information can be found in a reference provided by a community member.

Additionally, it's noted that Lidl in Ireland carries packaged "soft candy" mochi.
