DIY Ostomy Bag Odor Control Tips and Hernia Discussion

This topic is about managing the odor from an ostomy bag, especially when the wafer starts lifting due to a growing hernia. A new member is experiencing constant odor issues right after emptying and rinsing their pouch. They are using a non-filtered, reusable pouch that doesn't fit well because of a large parastomal hernia. They've tried using mouthwash and baby oil, but are allergic to lavender. They have also started using baking soda but are unsure about the right amount or method. They are looking for detailed advice on both homemade and store-bought solutions for odor control.

Here are some suggestions and insights:

1. Commercial deodorizing products:
- Consider using Hollister pouch deodorizer/lubricant for 2-piece systems.
- Try Devrom Internal Deodorant Capsules or chewables, available at pharmacies or ostomy suppliers.
- Look into Coloplast SenSura Mio Convex Flip barriers and pouches, which are designed to fit over hernias. Free samples are available online.
- Use barrier extenders, rings, or sheets from brands like Coloplast, ConvaTec, or Hollister. Free samples can be requested.
- Nu-Hope hernia/ostomy support belts can help stabilize the appliance.

2. DIY/household odor control:
- Keep a small open bowl of baking soda near the toilet and use a clip, spoon, or craft stick to add a pinch to the pouch each time you empty it.
- Tape half of a standard dryer sheet to the front of the pouch or fold it inside.
- Place a Listermint (Listerine) breath strip in the pouch daily for a minty scent.
- Add half an aspirin tablet to the pouch, as suggested by another member.
- Use garden herbs like rosemary, thyme, garlic, or mint to make aromatic rinse solutions, ensuring you are not allergic to them.

3. Appliance fit and leakage prevention:
- Ensure the wafer fits properly to eliminate odor; lifting needs urgent correction to prevent leaks.
- Eakin Cohesive Seals are highly recommended for improving the seal.
- Consider switching to a flexible 2-piece system like Hollister and use Skin Prep spray to protect the skin and strengthen adhesion.
- Barrier extenders or additional belts can help hold a convex baseplate firmly over uneven skin.
- Be aware that rinsing a reusable pouch may weaken the seal, and some brands may leak sooner than others.

4. Hernia-specific measures:
- Seek surgical repair before the hernia enlarges further.
- In the meantime, use hernia support belts and specialized convex barriers.
- Pelvic-core physical therapy aimed at abdominal and stoma support muscles can help reduce prolapse and improve appliance stability.

5. Diet and internal causes:
- Certain foods like broccoli and cauliflower or supplements like Vitamin D and B12 can cause strong internal odors. Try eliminating suspected items from your diet.
- If the odor persists and seems internal, consider ruling out medical issues, as one member did through imaging studies.
