Stoma Retraction Issues and Skin Breakdown Concerns

This topic is all about managing a stoma that tends to retract, which can lead to leaks and irritation of the skin around it. If you're dealing with this issue, here are some helpful tips and insights shared by others who have been in the same situation:

1. Use convexity: Many people find that switching to convex appliances helps. These are designed to push the stoma outward, directing output into the pouch more effectively.
- You might try a Coloplast shallow convex or a deeper convex pouch.
- Another option is a Hollister convex barrier ring, which can be used with any compatible pouch.

2. Reinforce the seal:
- Applying stomahesive paste around the convex ring can fill in gaps and improve how well everything sticks together.
- An Eakin Cohesive Seal can be layered with the convex barrier for extra protection against leaks.

3. Add an ostomy belt: Attaching a belt to the flange can help keep the convex barrier snug against your abdomen. This can slightly "pop" the stoma out, reducing leakage. Many users report fewer daily changes and calmer skin when they use a combination of a belt, convex flange, and Eakin seal.

4. Consider irrigation (for colostomies): One person mentioned planning to try colostomy irrigation as a longer-term strategy. This might help reduce how often you need to change your appliance and could potentially help with skin issues.
