Hollister 2-Piece System - Drain Tip for Easier Use

This topic is about making it easier to drain a Hollister 2-piece ostomy pouch by pre-creasing the outlet. Here are some helpful tips and insights shared by users and an ostomy nurse:

1. Before using a new pouch, create a "pleat" or crease in the plastic tail. Pinch both sides of the outlet to set the crease, then fold it up and fasten the Velcro. This helps prevent the two layers from sticking together when the pouch is full, making it easier and cleaner to open.

2. Without this crease, dried or thick output can cause the layers to stick together, making them difficult to separate. Some people have had to use toothpicks, water, twisting, or even replace the entire pouch when the outlet was "cemented" shut.

3. Many users find pre-creasing every new Hollister pouch essential. If the outlet still sticks, try using your thumb and forefinger to pinch the very tip and make a quick "snap" motion to pop it open. However, in very dry climates, this method might be less effective.

4. To help with drainage, you can add a few drops of mineral oil inside the pouch and rub or crinkle the plastic from top to bottom. This reduces surface tension, helping the output slide to the bottom and keeping the tail clearer.

5. Some users prefer alternative brands and products. Coloplast pouches, for example, often open just by squeezing the ends and are considered easier by some. Coloplast High Output bags with a drain plug are noted for having the cleanest and most convenient outlet design.

6. For a modified crease technique, after creasing, cut a small slit toward the outer edge of the fold. This creates a starter gap for easier opening, as shown by an ostomy nurse.
