Homemade Hydration Drinks for Ileostomists: What Works for You?

This topic is all about finding homemade hydration solutions for people with an ileostomy, offering alternatives to commercial drinks that are both refreshing and sustainable. Here are some helpful insights and advice shared by the community:

1. Homemade Oral Rehydration Solutions (ORS):
- St. Mark’s Solution: Mix 6 teaspoons of glucose powder, 1 teaspoon of table salt, and ½ teaspoon of sodium bicarbonate or citrate with water to make 1 liter.
- Oxford Solution: Combine 200 ml of full-sugar squash concentrate with 1 teaspoon of salt and water to make 1 liter.
- Basic ORS: Mix 1 liter of water with 6 teaspoons of sugar, ½ teaspoon of salt, and ½ teaspoon of baking soda.
- Alternative ORS: Combine 1 liter of water with ½ teaspoon of salt, ½ teaspoon of potassium chloride (a salt substitute), ½ teaspoon of baking soda, and 2 tablespoons of sugar.

2. Practical Tips for Managing Hydration:
- Look for simple solutions to manage sudden increases in liquid output.
- Seek advice from experienced individuals on managing electrolytes.
- Consider chewable electrolytes for convenience when on the go.
- Aim for low-sugar or non-commercial solutions to drink more effectively.

3. Whole Foods and Natural Choices:
- Watermelon is a great option due to its high water and electrolyte content.
- Whole milk can be effective for some, though it may not be suitable for everyone.
- Bao Coconut Water is recommended post-exercise for its potassium and natural sugars.

4. Diluted or Low-Sugar Commercial Drinks:
- Mix sports drinks like Gatorade with water (1/3 Gatorade to 2/3 water) to reduce sugar intake while staying hydrated.
- Consider electrolyte-enhanced waters like BodyArmor Sports Water or Smartwater, which are available at stores like Costco and Walmart.
- BodyArmor Lyte offers a flavored, low-sugar option for variety.

5. Powdered or Tablet Electrolyte Products:
- Venture Pal Sugar-Free Electrolyte Powder can be used at 1/3 the labeled dose to keep the flavor light and avoid high sugar.
- There is interest in finding a chewable electrolyte product for activities like pickleball, though no specific products have been recommended yet.

6. Practical Hydration Habits:
- Keep insulated water bottles in various locations, such as by your bed, in the living room, and in the car, to encourage frequent sipping and maintain hydration throughout the day.
