Complications After Barium GI with Ileostomy

This topic is about a person who has a temporary ileostomy and recently underwent a barium gastrointestinal study. This procedure was done to check if the bypassed section of his colon had healed properly before a planned ileostomy reversal surgery. Although the imaging showed that the colon had healed, he is now experiencing tightness, swelling, and pain in the previously inactive colon segment. There is concern about whether these symptoms are normal and how the barium used in the study will be cleared from his system since the colon is still disconnected.

Here are some pieces of advice and insights shared by others:

1. It is recommended to contact his gastrointestinal (GI) or colorectal surgeon as soon as possible to discuss the new symptoms of pain, swelling, and the potential issue of barium retention.
2. If the pain or swelling worsens or becomes difficult to manage, it is advised to visit the emergency department for immediate evaluation.
