My Stoma Emptying Device for Travel and Everyday Use

This topic is about creating a portable setup for emptying a stoma pouch, which is especially useful when traveling, hiking, driving, or flying. The idea is to have a convenient and discreet way to manage ostomy needs without relying on public restrooms. Here's how it works and some helpful tips:

- The setup involves a lightweight, reusable device made from a common screw-top plastic jar. Two small vent holes are drilled into the jar to allow air to escape, enabling a Hollister disposable ostomy pouch-liner to expand fully inside.

- Extra Hollister disposal bags are stored at the bottom of the jar. When it's time to empty the pouch, the contents are drained into the bag-lined jar. The liner is then tied off, similar to a dog-waste bag, and disposed of at the next available trash can.

- For cleaning, only alcohol or baby wipes are needed for the pouch outlet and hands. This setup has been successfully used in cars, on wilderness hikes, and during commercial flights, making it easier to manage without searching for restrooms or dealing with cramped airplane lavatories.

Additional insights from the originator include:

- The device is designed to avoid unpleasant highway restrooms, tiny airplane lavatories, and long stretches without facilities. During flights, turbulence can make standing to empty the pouch difficult, so using the jar while seated is cleaner and safer.

- The sealed bag can be stored in a day-pack without odor, and biodegradable liners are an option. Medicare in the USA covers all ostomy supplies, including the Hollister liners.

- The originator has an ileostomy, which means high output, making closed-end pouches impractical. The device will be used on an upcoming long-haul flight to Tokyo.

Advice and insights from others include:

1. Many people who camp, road-trip, or paddle carry a container with waste bags for this purpose, as it helps prevent wafer blowouts.

2. Alternative containers can be used, such as large fast-food drink cups with snap-on lids, plastic coffee cans, or any sealable screw-top jar. These can be discreet and disposable, with pre-inserted zip-lock or biodegradable bags inside.

3. For odor and leak control, twist-tie or knot the used bag like a dog-poop bag. Adding a scoop of cat-litter granules to each liner can absorb liquid and reduce odor.

4. Dispose of the sealed bag in the nearest trash can, Port-a-John, or trailhead bin, similar to pet-waste disposal.

5. When hiking or in the back-country, biodegradable liners minimize environmental impact. Some trails even supply dog-waste dispensers that can be used for ostomy output.

6. Closed-end pouches may be suitable for colostomates but can be costly for ileostomates. Using standard drainable pouches with disposable liners helps keep costs down.

7. A YouTube video demonstration of another portable emptying system is available for those interested in seeing a similar setup in action.
