Seeking Durable Ostomy Bag Options for Elderly Mother

This topic is about finding a suitable ostomy bag for a 95-year-old woman who has been using Hollister’s Karaya 5 line, which has been discontinued. The caregiver is looking for a pouch made of heavier plastic because the replacement products have a thinner film that is difficult for her mother to manage. Due to arthritis, she prefers a clamp closure over Velcro. Despite reaching out to home health services and medical supply companies, they haven't found a suitable alternative. Here are some suggestions to help find a durable ostomy bag:

1. Contact manufacturers directly to request free samples. Most companies are willing to send several products if you provide the stoma size and type of ostomy (ileostomy or colostomy).

2. Involve an ostomy nurse to accurately measure the stoma and recommend compatible systems.

3. Present the sampling process as a choice for the mother. Explain that Karaya 5 is no longer available and let her select the pouch she prefers, which might help ease her resistance to change.

4. Consider brands known for thicker film:
- Coloplast SenSura Mio one-piece drainable pouch, which can be requested without the filter. It uses a wide Velcro closure and has a large outlet.
- Convatec ActiveLife one-piece drainable pouch, which uses a clamp/clip closure and has relatively thick plastic, though the outlet is smaller.

5. Try contacting Marlen Manufacturing for sample appliances, which can be ordered directly from their website or by phone.

6. Be aware that many companies have recently reduced pouch thickness across their product lines, so extensive sampling may be necessary to find a suitable match.

7. Once a satisfactory pouch is found, consider ordering in bulk to maintain consistency and minimize future disruptions.
