Seeking Alternatives for Easy-Drain Ostomy Pouches

This topic is about finding an ostomy pouch that drains easily without the hassle of dealing with hard-plastic ends. The person sharing their experience has tried various pouches and is looking for one that sticks well, drains cleanly, and is available through the NHS. Here are some insights and advice shared by others:

1. The person previously used Coloplast SenSura Mio pouches, which adhered well for years but eventually stopped sticking reliably. They found drainage to be messy unless they trimmed the rigid plastic tip at the bottom.

2. All current UK-supplied samples adhere well, but most have the same hard-plastic end that makes emptying difficult, except for a Marlen pouch that is not available.

3. The Marlen pouch drained well and had a translucent wafer, but production issues and a thin cosmetic cover were drawbacks.

4. The person is considering returning to older clip-closure styles, which worked well in the past.

5. They have not tried 2-piece systems yet but are open to them, currently changing the appliance daily and using a washer to protect the stoma.

6. A face-to-face visit with a hospital stoma nurse is planned to explore more products.

7. In the meantime, they have ordered a "good-enough" pouch on prescription until they find the ideal one.

Here are some recommendations from others:

- ConvaTec one-piece pouch #22771 with clip closure is simple and has never leaked. It has a wide wax-like barrier and holds firmly with a slim barrier or gasket.

- Salts Confidence Natural (one-piece) has been used successfully for over 10 years, with improved adhesion after a flange redesign. It is slightly longer than many current bags and easily available through the NHS.

- Hollister 2-piece systems have reported zero leaks over two years, with wafers changed every 7 days. Bags come in different lengths, which is helpful for shorter wearers.

- Some users prefer the firm fold-and-Velcro outlet of Coloplast SenSura Mio, while others have experienced occasional Velcro-end leakage.

General tips for drainage:

- Older clip or wire-clip closures can drain more cleanly than modern Velcro ends, so it might be worth requesting samples.

- Forming a cuff when emptying soft-spout bags can help prevent mess.

For skin and accessory products:

- 3M Cavilon No-Sting Barrier Film is effective for skin protection but is currently on back-order.

- Slim barrier/gaskets can help reduce seepage under pouches.

For supply resources:

- 180medical is known for quickly shipping extra supplies and working directly with insurance, which is useful for testing multiple brands.
