Diamond or Square - Best Shape for Installing a Wafer/Flange?

This topic is about deciding whether to apply an ostomy wafer or flange in a square orientation or to rotate it 45 degrees into a diamond shape. The original question comes from someone who noticed that many YouTube videos suggest using the diamond position and is curious if this is actually a better method.

Here are some helpful insights and advice on this topic:

1. For those with flat abdomens, the orientation—square or diamond—often doesn't affect performance. It's best to choose the position that avoids skin folds, creases, or sore spots.

2. Your body shape and how you move are important. Try both orientations to see which one helps prevent leaks when you bend or sit.

3. The best way to find what works for you is through trial and error. Everyone's anatomy and lifestyle are different, so the best fit will vary from person to person.

4. Switching between square and diamond orientations occasionally can give the skin around your stoma a break and reduce pressure points. Some people also try different appliance brands using free samples for the same reason.

5. Many people usually apply the wafer in a square orientation but switch to diamond for comfort or to avoid pressure on a hip or sore area. Cutting the wafer hole slightly off-center can also help reposition the adhesive area.

6. If you use Hollister systems:
- Hollister 2-piece flanges can be worn in either square or diamond orientation.
- Hollister 1-piece systems used with the Hollister belt must be applied in a square orientation so the belt tabs align correctly.
