Convex vs Flat Wafers for Stoma Care: Personal Experiences

This topic is about finding the right type of ostomy wafer to prevent leaks and reduce skin pain, especially for those with a rounded abdomen. The person sharing their experience has tried different methods to stop leaks and manage discomfort, including using barrier rings and different types of wafers. Here are some helpful insights and advice based on their experience:

1. Trying a standard convex wafer might be a good option. Some people have had success with these, even if their stoma protrudes above the skin. Examples include the Hollister one-piece convex 8415, which is used for urostomies, and other brands that come with an elastic belt for extra stability.

2. It's important to wait until any existing skin irritation or separation has healed before testing a convex wafer. Applying pressure from a convex wafer on damaged skin can slow down the healing process.

3. If hard convex wafers cause pain, consider trying soft convex products. Many people find them more comfortable while still providing a good seal.

4. To protect the seal, consider using a device that diverts output away from the stoma. One option is the Flowassist by Ostoform, which is a plastic lip that sits at the bottom of the stoma and directs effluent into the pouch, preventing it from undermining the barrier ring.

5. If irritation extends far down the abdomen, it's worth investigating other possible causes, such as additional leakage paths or mechanical rubbing, to prevent ongoing skin issues.

6. Using an ostomy belt with convexity can improve wafer adhesion and comfort, especially for those with rounded abdomens.
