Colostomy Concerns: Increased Bleeding and Using Olive Oil

This topic is about someone who recently transitioned from having an ileostomy to a colostomy after undergoing hernia repair and reversal surgery. They are experiencing more bleeding with their new colostomy stoma compared to their previous ileostomy and are curious if this is common. They are also exploring whether using olive oil in the pouch can help stool move more easily to the bottom. Here are some helpful insights and advice shared by others:

1. Minor bleeding is generally normal. The tissue around the stoma is delicate and can bleed easily when touched or rubbed, but it usually stops quickly. This is a common experience shared by many and supported by an ostomy nurse.

2. It's important to identify where the bleeding is coming from:
- If the blood is on the outside surface or at the edge where the wafer touches, it might be due to friction or a minor bump, which is usually harmless. Applying a little stoma powder can help stop the bleeding.
- If the bleeding seems to come from inside the stoma, such as blood in the output, it's important to seek medical advice promptly.

3. For lubricating the pouch:
- Using extra-virgin olive oil, cooking spray, or baby oil can be effective in reducing sticking and helping the output slide down more easily. Many have found success with this method, though results can vary.
- Natural oils can be a cost-effective alternative to commercial ostomy lubricants designed for the same purpose.
