Experiencing Anal Discharge with a Colostomy Bag

This topic is about someone who has been living with a colostomy for three years and is thinking about having it reversed. They are worried about having to stay in the hospital again. Recently, they have started experiencing what they believe are hemorrhoids due to fecal matter getting stuck in the anal tract. They also feel rectal pressure whenever they have a bowel movement into their ostomy bag. They have never had anal discharge before and are curious if this is normal or if others have experienced similar issues.

Here are some helpful insights and advice:

1. Feeling rectal pressure or a "phantom" urge is quite common. Even though the bowel is rerouted, the pelvic floor muscles can still contract, similar to a ghost-limb sensation.

2. If the rectum is still intact, ongoing rectal mucus is expected. The rectum naturally secretes mucus and slough.

3. The only way to completely stop the discharge is through a surgical procedure to remove the rectum, known as a proctectomy.

4. To manage mucus:
- Sit on the toilet and deliberately bear down to expel mucus each time you use the bathroom. This can help reduce unexpected leakage during the day.
- Gently massage around the anus while on the toilet to help empty more mucus.
- Some people find that an occasional milk enema is helpful, but it's important to discuss this with a healthcare professional first.

5. For controlling leakage:
- Use and change absorbent pads, such as "butterfly pads," standard incontinence pads, or period underwear, several times a day.
- Avoid wearing light-colored clothing if leakage is a concern.
