Help Needed: Wafer Not Sticking When Wet

This topic is about finding ways to keep ostomy wafers secure when they get wet, such as during showers or swimming. The person sharing their experience is having trouble with their wafer lifting when it gets wet, and they are looking for solutions to improve adhesion. Here are some helpful tips and insights shared by others:

1. Try different skin-prep or barrier films:
- Consider using McKesson Skin Barrier Film, Non-Sting Wipe, which might be available as a sample.
- Independence Fusion Glue Barrier Film Applicator is known for good bonding strength.

2. Add or change supporting tapes:
- Use 3M Micropore tape or regular 3M medical tape around the edges of the wafer, as they are affordable and easy to find.
- Apply flange extenders only when the appliance is completely dry, and make sure to dry thoroughly after showering.

3. Switch pouching system components:
- Request free samples from different brands like Convatec, Hollister, or Salts, as some systems handle water better.
- Some specific combinations that have worked well include:
- Convatec flat flange with a matching bag.
- Hollister convex bag #54101 with a Cohesive washer.
- Salts ring under a Hollister flange with flange extenders.

4. Use mechanical or physical strategies for showering and swimming:
- Cover the appliance with Glad Press ’n Seal or similar plastic, and tape the edges before showering to keep it mostly dry.
- Try commercial waterproof dressings like Nuanchu Dialysis Catheter Covers as a temporary waterproof shield.
- Create a small "shower curtain" or splash guard to protect the wafer from direct spray.

5. Improve application techniques:
- After placing a barrier ring, use an empty tape spool to apply firm, even pressure.
- Ensure the skin around the stoma is completely dry; if sweating is an issue, wipe the skin dry or use unscented "MUM" roll-on deodorant to reduce perspiration before applying the wafer.
- Use Skin-Tac wipes under the wafer for extra grip between changes.

6. Troubleshoot products and seek support:
- If the Ten Aces adhesive spray nozzle is not working, try pressing it very firmly or contact the company for a replacement.
- Reach out to ostomy nurses from manufacturers like Convatec or Hollister for advice on fit problems and alternative products.

7. Explore bonding cements:
- Some suppliers offer medical-grade bonding cements that might be covered by insurance, providing up to 7-day wear even with daily showers and swimming.

8. Seek peer assistance:
- A forum member offered to send spare adhesive remover spray and adhesive to help with temporary supply needs.
