Traveling with Ostomy Supplies: Lessons from Belize

Traveling with ostomy supplies in hot and humid climates can be a bit challenging, as one traveler discovered during a 3-week holiday in Belize. The intense heat and humidity, combined with active jungle adventures, caused their flanges to fail much quicker than expected. Instead of lasting the usual five days, some flanges only lasted 24 hours, which almost left them short on supplies. Here are some helpful tips and insights for managing ostomy supplies in such conditions:

1. Pack one complete set-up, which includes a flange or wafer and a pouch, for each day of your trip. This approach has been reliable for many travelers.

2. To help your wafer last longer in hot and humid weather:
- Apply medical tape around all the edges of the wafer once your skin is dry.
- 3M Transpore tape, which is hospital-grade, comes highly recommended.
- Keep the tape on for about 24 hours after a fresh change to help the wafer bond securely.
- Using this method, some active users have managed to go 6 to 7 days between changes, even in hot conditions.

These tips can help ensure you have a smoother experience while traveling in warm climates.
