Need a Tool for Cutting Holes in Wafers - Suggestions?

When it comes to managing an ostomy, one of the tasks you might encounter is cutting a hole in the ostomy wafer barrier to fit your stoma. Finding the right tool for this job can make a big difference in your daily routine. Here are some suggestions and tips to help you with this task:

1. Commercial Punch:
- Consider using the "Stoma Hole Cutter" from Nu-Hope Laboratories, which is available through Byram Healthcare.

2. Hardware-Store or DIY Punches:
- A standard 1-inch gasket punch can be used with a rubber mallet on a small piece of 3/8-inch plywood.
- You can also make your own cutter by sharpening the edge of a 12-point socket that matches your stoma size. Attach a 4-inch extension bar to use as a handle.

3. Everyday Improvised Cutter:
- A plastic bottle cap of the correct diameter can work as a cutter. Rotate the cap as you press down to avoid jagged edges.

4. Wafer Options That Eliminate Cutting:
- The ConvaTec SUR-FIT Natura Durahesive Moldable Skin Barrier with flange is a two-piece system that doesn't require cutting.
- ConvaTec Natura Moldable wafers are available in flat or convex versions. The convexity is deeper and more rigid on Convatec’s Convex-it wafers compared to similar products from Hollister or Coloplast.
- Moldable wafers come in Stomahesive for thicker output and Durahesive for liquid output, which sticks more aggressively.
- These are generally not recommended for ileostomy or urostomy output.
- Moldable convex wafers are softer and less rigid than standard Convex-it wafers.

5. Pre-Cut Service:
- After measuring your stoma, you can have suppliers ship wafers pre-cut to size. Contact customer service at any vendor to arrange this service.

6. Storage Tip:
- Keep punches and other cutting tools together in a secure box under the bathroom vanity to prevent misplacement or damage.
