Pain around pelvis after surgery, need advice

This topic is about someone who is experiencing pelvic pain and drainage issues eight weeks after having surgery to close their rectum. They are concerned about small holes in their abdominal and perineal areas and are wondering if these could be causing the pain.

Here are some pieces of advice and insights shared by others:

1. It's important to get a professional assessment as soon as possible. Many suggest visiting a stoma nurse, general practitioner, practice nurse, or ideally, the original surgeon to check the wounds and ensure there are no complications.

2. While some drainage from small openings can be normal in the first couple of months, it should be monitored. These should heal over time. Additionally, experiencing false urges to defecate can occur and might feel strange but not necessarily painful.

3. There are some potential complications to be aware of:
- Tunnelling or sinus tract wounds, which need to heal from the inside out. This might require reopening, packing with gauze, and continuous nursing care to avoid infection.
- Infection or pelvic pain related to previous radiation therapy, which can last up to a year.
- Musculoskeletal pain from awkward sleeping positions post-surgery. Adjusting your sleeping position might help relieve hip or pelvic pain.

4. Some people have experienced discharge for 6 to 10 months and found it helpful to use sanitary pads for protection while healing.

5. It's crucial to address any small issues early on to prevent them from getting worse and to reduce long-term discomfort.
